Many of us have been using Professor’s Method of Throwing the Coins to access the I Ching and read between the lines of our logical thinking. Yet, I find that this foundational book, so full of helpful information, is not often used during a consultation. Not all client questions can be answered by looking at the Feng shui alone. For instance:

• Why is someone unable to trust?
• Why has alienation been a lifelong theme?
• Why is assuming responsibility so difficult?

Each question might have a Feng Shui component, but if that design detail does not exist, how will you proceed? Even if you do find the corresponding detail, the answer may be broader than the story provided by the Feng Shui. Some questions are calling out for the soulful voice of the I Ching. So, let’s discuss how to find and translate the following to a client:

• The overriding importance of the change line
• The heart of the question at hand – the core of the situation
• The things that rest beyond our control – and pull the strings
• The shadow side – what the situation is definitely not
• The path not taken – what could have been
• How one can change one’s perspective – achieving a role reversal
