Coral is a classic color making a big comeback. Like Pantone, every year a team of Sherwin-Williams color experts forecasts color trends based on global cultural influences, fashion, art, and innovations in science and technology. They just unveiled their Color of the Year for 2015, Coral Reef SW 6606. It’s a lively hue that is a blend of pink, orange, and red. It can add a pop of color inside or outside and coordinates well with a bold or soft color palette.
Pantone tells us that Marsala, a wine-red with a brown undertone, speaks to a need for nurturing our body, mind, soul during these unstable times. Sherwin-Williams explains that their pick is upbeat, optimistic and represents a time for renewal.
Looking at these two colors from our tradition, we see that both hues contain red—the color providing the warmth, clarity, and insight to see us through these turbulent times. Marsala’s brown undertones give us the ability to accept whatever comes, and to remain grounded, pliable, and accommodating (the qualities of Earth). The orange and pink of Coral Reef offer both hope and happiness.
This is what Sherwin-Williams director of marketing says about Coral Reef:
Its unexpected versatility brings life to a range of design aesthetics, whether traditional, vintage, cottage or contemporary.
I especially love coral because it contains all my favorite colors—red, orange, and pink. It makes me smile as I recall my post-college days living in Hawaii, enjoying coral-colored sunsets and eating juicy tropical fruits.
