Digital communication portals are opening every day and framing new relationships in high-tech cyberspace. As we chat, blog, and twitter, we are connecting worldwide – united as never before. However, is a “friend” on Facebook really a friend? Is a “blogging interface” as efficient as a face-to-face? Are you a twit if you twitter too much?

Our notions about relationship are being challenged IM by IM, text by text.

How will we deal with the inevitable when we are already pressured to simply keep up? What happens when our children are (virtually) bullied or stalked? When online diaries tell too much? When “chat” becomes humiliating gossip? How do we balance the downside of this revolution with the opportunities for creativity, learning, entrepreneurship, innovation, and political activism?

Since before this millennium, His Holiness Professor Lin Yun stressed the dangers (and opportunities) of this time. At the core of his teachings are methods to help us create safe and beneficial new relationships, to sustain and nurture old relationships, and to find balance during this period of rapid global transition. During this time, we have the opportunity, and, I believe, the responsibility, to help shape the culture in which we are all “growing up.”

Professor’s teachings are highly relevant as we are called to action personally, professionally, and as citizens of the world. He has taught us methods to quell the fear that accompanies rapid and unpredictable change, to address the impulsive and aggressive nature of anonymous communication, to deal with Internet addiction, and to lessen the fatigue created by constant information overload. The consequences of our actions are enormous as we interact in drastically new ways.

There is a vital place for the transcendental as the digital commentary unfolds. Let’s embrace the possibilities, and face the dangers, of a new global culture in the making.
