I received two more calls this week from parents with a child diagnosed with autism. I am always touched by those who choose to better understand how the physical environment can help to support these children. A Feng Shui practitioner can add great benefit. One of those benefits is a Sun Moon Mirror for both the parents and the child. Years ago, Professor said, “Using the mirror will help parents – and doctors – to see through the diagnosis of illness to the unique, unusual, and productive skills and aptitudes of their children.
Immediately after speaking to one parent, I heard Steve Silberman on NPR, the author of Neuro Tribes, The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity. I have the book in hand, and I want to share one quote:
“. . . neurodiversity, the notion that conditions like autism, dyslexia, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder should be regarded as naturally occurring cognitive variations with distinctive strengths that have contributed to the evolution of technology and culture rather than mere checklists of deficits and dysfunctions.”
Mr. Silberman goes on to suggest that we celebrate this wider range of human intelligence and develop an educational system that supports this “natural variation in the human genome.”
It’s a great read, and I see Professor smiling.
