Blank exterior walls, sometimes created by zoning policies alone, can change one’s emotional state. You can walk a city block with a blank facade and feel a bit more negative. Research is now telling us that we should seriously consider designing from the outside in, rather than the inside out – which is most common. The essence of this article – architects should begin to think a lot more about the daily experience of people in cities. Our brains respond to geometries, and our city streets have an impact on our emotional wellbeing.
