I learned a new term living here in Seattle—“Sun Breaks.” The rain and fog give way, now and then, and the sun’s lightening shines upon the land. I am called to move outside, if even for a brief moment before the darkness returns. As the sun “breaks” more often now, I am reminded that this is a highly productive, beautiful, and exciting time.
I will watch the raspberry canes reach for the sky, honoring their promise to delight the neighborhood with an abundance of delicious delight. I will figure out a new way to protect my sweet peas from a swift and cunning hungry bunny. I will ask my neighbors for much needed bunny advice, put my imagination to work, and create a practical and beautiful solution. I will resist last year’s bunny impatience, choosing instead collaboration with those in the know. I am determined to see this dilemma anew.
Every day we are presented with the most ordinary of events, and I believe that potential discoveries spring from each and every one. When my hungry bunny returns, I will thank her for alerting me to my Impertinent impatience. I will remember that the world is ready for me to see all things anew—calmly, patiently, and confidently. Will I be receptive to things more sublime than my emotions?
How will I use the sun’s lightening?
